Finally, face-to-face stuff is hard to schedule and may be disastrous if you're communicating things the client could have known for some time via soft notifications. If you're a customer like me, you have an unnatural aversion to that red voicemail light blinking at you (which is a great soft notifier, but a stressful one for me). Phone calls? Those are interventions that demand interaction that's not often user-controlled. Texts might work, but once a customer clicks on it, and goes elsewhere on the phone, they don't necessarily know it existed without creating a reminder (that's not soft). Emails get buried, particularly if you're sending 20 a day and only one a week matters. They got about everything else right.Ĭompare soft notifications with "hard" notifications companies rely on to communicate information to clients. I'm mystified that Honda's amazing designers missed this. ![]() The red light is always around and communicates what I really need to know. Range varies with fuel economy and ultimately I just want to know if I'm gonna be calling AAA in the next ten miles or so. There are at least four ways to see fuel data on that car via selectable dashboards, but it's always range, not fuel available. If you're driving as you should.hands in the 10 and 2 o'clock positions, or too often in my case, one hand in the 2 o'clock position.you can't see the fuel gauge nor the low fuel indicator. My Honda Odyssey is a brilliantly designed car for its intended purpose (haul kids, haul junk). Some soft notifications communicate critical data that's not easily accessible. There's a risk to them when they are poorly designed. They don't clutter or impede primary workflow. They communicate what Ambient Orb's CEO calls " glanceable data." Just a metric or two for someone. They sit in the periphery and can be ignored, though ignoring them (e.g., a response to an InMail confirming interest in a meeting) can have bad effects. They are always available in the user's environment. They provide relevant information that's user-defined and user-controlled.Soft notifications always have some of the following parameters: ![]()
